lead-qualification

What is B2B lead qualification and how to identify real opportunities?

B2B lead qualification is the process of filtering and evaluating captured contacts to determine if they possess the profile, need, and purchasing power required to become customers. Its goal is to ensure the sales team only invests time in meetings with companies that represent a genuine business opportunity, thereby optimizing the sales cycle.

Lead scoring in the qualification process

Lead scoring is a points-based technique that allows for the objective classification of leads. Points are assigned based on two variables: sociodemographic fit (whether the company matches your target sector or size) and the level of interaction (actions taken on your website or with your agents).

To make qualification effective, at Pivote Marketing we cross-reference two fundamental axes: Fit (company alignment) and Pain/Engagement (intensity of the problem and level of interest).

  • Profile Axis (Fit): we analyze if the company meets the minimum requirements: sector, revenue volume, technology stack, and whether we are speaking with the decision-maker.
  • Intent Axis (Engagement): we measure behavior. Have they requested information? Attended a webinar? Shown openness to a discovery meeting?
Profile / IntentLow Intent (Observer)High Intent (Active)
High Fit (ICP)Nurturing lead: Your ideal client, but in no rush. Marketing should continue educating them.Immediate opportunity: The perfect SQL. Must be contacted within 24 hours.
Low Fit (Non-ICP)Disqualified: Does not fit your business model. Archive.Low value lead: Has interest but lacks purchasing power or structure.

Other reference scoring models

While we customize the matrix for each client at Pivote, there are other market approaches that help define this technique:

  • Juan Merodio’s “Pain vs Fit” model: This system proposes two distinct scores. The Fit Score measures alignment with the buyer persona, while the Pain Score measures the intensity of the problem.
  • Predictive scoring model (Lead Pilot): Commonly used by automation tools to assign real-time points.
    • Visit to pricing page: +20 points.
    • Case study download: +10 points.
    • Email from a free domain (Gmail/Outlook): -15 points.
    • Inactivity for over 30 days: -30 points.

Benefits of lead qualification

A high volume of unfiltered contacts saturates the pipeline and dilutes the sales team’s efforts. Qualification is a resource optimization tool that brings several advantages:

  • Closing ratio optimization: Directing efforts toward companies with a real need increases success rates naturally.
  • Senior talent ROI: Ensures experienced sales profiles are dedicated to negotiation and closing rather than basic prospecting.
  • Sales cycle acceleration: Focusing on contacts with short-term problems reduces the time from first contact to signature.
  • Sincronía entre Marketing y Ventas: Internal friction disappears when Marketing delivers validated, proposal-ready opportunities.
  • Revenue predictability: A sales pipeline free of unqualified leads allows for much more accurate revenue projections.

Types of leads according to their maturity

To manage the sales funnel successfully, we must classify contacts by their degree of maturity:

1. IQL (Information Qualified Lead)

The “awareness” phase. The lead seeks to resolve generic doubts. The goal is to provide value and position ourselves as experts without selling yet.

2. MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead)

A contact who fits the ICP and has shown interest in specific solutions. They need validation that you are the best option before moving forward.

3. SQL (Sales Qualified Lead)

The gold standard. A lead validated by an SDR team with a confirmed problem, budget, and genuine interest in a proposal.

Qualification methods

1. BANT

Based on four pillars: Budget, Authority, Need, and Timeline.

2. CHAMP

Focuses on the problem first: Challenges, Authority, Money, and Prioritization.

3. MEDDIC

Used for high-budget, complex sales. It analyzes metrics, decision processes, and identifies the “Champion” (internal ally).

What questions are suitable for good qualification?

  • About the problem: “If you don’t resolve this inefficiency in the coming months, what impact will it have on your operating costs?”
  • About authority: “Besides yourself, which other profiles need to give their approval to launch the project?”
  • About budget: “Do you already have a fund reserved for this type of improvement or would you need to request it as an extraordinary expense?”
  • About fit: “What do you value most in a provider: proximity, technical specialization, or speed of implementation?”

Steps for efficient qualification

  1. Define your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP): Know exactly who you are looking for and define exclusion criteria.
  2. Design a validation questionnaire: Create a conversation guide to extract objective data on budget, authority, and urgency.
  3. Implement a specialized role (SDR): Use a specific profile to “open the door” without the pressure of the immediate close.
  4. Establish a scoring system (Lead Scoring): Systematize how you value each piece of data to prioritize meetings.
  5. Document the detected “pain”: Provide a clear summary of the client’s needs so the salesperson can personalize the proposal.
  6. Analyze and adjust the process: Meet monthly to ensure SQLs are actually converting into sales.

At Pivote Marketing, we execute these steps externally to guarantee every meeting in your calendar is a real business opportunity.
